CV Advice

“A good CV is a list of achievements, not just responsibilities” - Plc Finance Director

Your CV is the main document a prospective employer can use to determine whether or not to interview you.  So spend some time writing it and show it to trusted friends to make sure it reads well and presents you in the best possible way.

A chronological CV is the most common format for a professional CV.  This means presenting your career and academic history in reverse order (current employer first) and offering more information for the most recent roles.  Your future boss is unlikely to be basing his or her decision on the summer job you took whilst at university.

Structure Guide

1. Personal information – name, address, contact details including email address (avoid whacky hotmail addresses).
2. Education and Qualifications – include dates attended, names of institutions, grades and pass record.
3. Languages – fluent or basic.
4. Systems experience – e.g. SAP implementation, Basic Sage.
5. Career History – most recent first, dates employed, nature of employers business including recent turnover. Also indicate your reporting line.
6. Hobbies and Interests – This is important because it tells the reader something about you. Keep it brief but one to avoid is “socialising with friends”.

Some Do’s and Don’ts

Do

  • Underline each employer and include a company description with headline financial details e.g. turnover, profitability and/or market cap.
  • Spell check (you’d be surprised).

Don’t

  • Attach a recent photograph of yourself.
  • Include any poetry or quotes from historical figures and former presidents.
  • Hide any gaps, it will only come up at interview and cause awkwardness.
